The prescription drug Alprostadil is used as a form of therapy for erectile dysfunction (ED). This drug helps blood vessels to expand in the penis as well as your body. Alprostadil can be administered in two ways. You can inject it right into the penis or you use it as a suppository by inserting it into the opening at the tip of the penis. Alprostadil is sold as Caverject, Edex and Prostin VR. MUSE is the suppository form. Only men with ED should use Alprostadil. If it is not properly used, it can cause permanent damage to the penis.
Does Alprostadil Work?
It is reported that the injected form is able to cause an engorged penis solid enough for sexual intercourse in more than 80 percent of the men who have ED independent of their age or reason for their ED. Apparently, the suppositories are not nearly as effective with an erection occurring in about 35 percent of patients ED.
How Long Does it Take to Start Working?
Alprostadil works quickly in as little as five to twenty minutes. Nevertheless, you need to wait anywhere from ten to thirty minutes before you become intimate. You have about an hour for sexual intercourse. The erection should remain for about an hour. It's not supposed to be used more than 3 times within a week.
Who Shouldn't Take Alprostadil?
- If you're allergic to Alprostadil
- Have a penis implant
- Have priapism (prolonged, painful erection)
- Have Peyronie's disease (curvature of the penis)
- Have bleeding problems (on blood thinners)
- Have penile infection
- Have sickle cell anemia, leukemia, cancer, thrombocythemia
How to Inject Alprostadil?
Your health care provider will give you a full demonstration on how to inject yourself. Some prescriptions require preparation before you can inject them, your doctor can show you how to do that as well. If you use a Caverject Impulse, you don't need to wash your hands. On the other hand, if you have to load a syringe with Alprostadil, you'll need to wash your hands well. Place your prescription bottles on a hard, dry surface. Make sure to swab the bottle tops with alcohol. In preparing your dose make sure to use it right away. If you have any unused portion left, make sure to throw it away. Dispose of the needle as well.
How to Insert a Suppository
First you need to urinate. Not to worry, the suppository diameter is very small. The suppository is inserted with an applicator. A small amount of lubricant can be used if needed. There is a small button on the applicator that you need to push to deposit the suppository. The suppository needs to be dissolved by rolling your hands on your penis (10 seconds). A tingling sensation may occur and if it does, continue rolling your penis till it stops. Move around a bit to get your blood circulating before sexual intercourse.
You'll need to use a condom if you have sex with a pregnant women no matter which form of Alprostadil you use (suppository or injection). It is unknown at this time how Alprostadil will affect a fetus.
Alprostadil Side Effects
- Pain at the injection site
- Curving of the penis with pain during an erection
- Priapism – erection lasting for more than 4 hours
- Swelling or pain in the testes
- Bleeding or spotting from the urethra
